THE ARTISTS & THE HOTELS
Four celebrated photographers. Four hotels. And the magic of travel—the chance to see things in a new way, to alter our perceptions, and find inspiration from our surroundings.
Jonas Bendiksen at Hotel Luc
Cristina de Middel at Alaia Belize
Gregory Halpern at The National
Alessandra Sanguinetti at Mesm Tokyo
JONAS BENDIKSEN AT HOTEL LUC
Jonas Bendiksen, staying at Hotel Luc, dives into the streets of Berlin in search of spontaneous moments of inspiration and convergence.
Jonas Bendiksen
Bendiksen explores the texture of the city as he finds unexpected treasures along the way.
In Berlin, Jonas started each day without a specific plan, in order to not undermine the open nature of his creative impulse and process. He struck out on foot, letting his instincts be his guide, opening himself up to spontaneous moments of inspiration: a figure glimpsed through a pane of fractured glass, an explosion of feeding birds, the glow of a streetlight on a graffiti covered wall. For Bendiksen, these moments are found treasures, small stories that tell you everything about a place.
CRISTINA DE MIDDEL AT ALAIA BELIZE
Cristina de Middel, staying at Alaia Belize, engages with the powerful light, nature, and vibrant colors of San Pedro, Belize, playfully blurring the lines of fact and fiction.
Cristina de Middel
De Middel’s spirited imagery adapts to the local taste of drama and comedy, capturing the impossible and unbelievable.
In the world of Cristina de Middel’s photography, nothing is quite as it seems. Often, the strange appears ordinary, and the ordinary appears strange. This is by design. Her images are intended to make you look closer, to make you question what you’re seeing, whether it’s a red balloon or a palm tree. In San Pedro, the intensity of the light and color became the jumping off point for experimentation, play, and discovery.
GREGORY HALPERN AT THE NATIONAL
Gregory Halpern, staying at The National, creates a dynamic, emotional portrait of Oklahoma City through unconventional encounters with its landscapes and people.
Gregory Halpern
Halpern’s emphasis on being an observer leads him to the unusual and the hidden.
Gregory Halpern likes to get to know a place in a roundabout way, by putting himself in the path of unexpected encounters. In Oklahoma City, this meant time spent in boxing gyms, a barber shop, a rodeo, and parts of the city both new and old. For Halpern, it’s about finding those moments when the real reveals itself, and an unguarded encounter can occur. In doing so, he forms a moving, impressionistic portrait of Oklahoma City—where people and landscape meet.
ALESSANDRA SANGUINETTI AT MESM TOKYO
Alessandra Sanguinetti, staying at Mesm Tokyo, probes the surface of the city in search of character and mystery, revealing unseen dimensions.
Alessandra Sanguinetti
Sanguinetti finds quiet intensity through a timeless and moody lens.
Alessandra Sanguinetti uses contrast to reveal the life beneath the surface, the life we don’t always see. To do this, she must establish a sense of intimacy with her subjects. In Tokyo, an immense city of formidable reserve and formality, this is not a simple task, but it is the only way to get at the mystery that captivates her imagination: what we reveal and what we keep hidden. Her images, which employ light and dark to dramatic effect, offer striking glimpses into the rich interior worlds and textures of ordinary lives in Tokyo.
